Overview

[1‑13C] sodium acetate is a stable isotope-labeled form of sodium acetate in which the carbon at position 1 of the acetyl group is replaced with the non-radioactive isotope carbon‑13. It is chemically identical to regular sodium acetate except for this isotopic substitution. The compound is primarily used as a tracer in metabolic studies and diagnostic imaging, such as hyperpolarized MRI/MRS and metabolomics research. In these applications, it allows for tracking of metabolic pathways involving the acetyl group due to its unique NMR signature. Mechanistically, after administration, [1‑13C] sodium acetate enters cellular metabolism where it can be converted into acetyl-CoA and further metabolized via the tricarboxylic acid cycle or other biosynthetic pathways; its labeled carbon enables precise study of these processes[2][3]. It does not have direct pharmacological activity but serves as an investigative tool in clinical research.
